About the event
Those battling substance use disorder often experience stigma, shame, isolation, fear and more. Unfortunately, family members are subject to the same emotions and judgments for the ways they cope with a loved one’s substance use disorder or other mental health diagnoses. Join Mary McGraw Gordon, MA, LAADC, ICAADC as she shares a pro-active resiliency approach to the many stages of family recovery. Gordon will draw from her three decades of experience in the recovery field to share how you can successfully encourage connectivity in families and decrease isolation. Objectives
Practice addressing the needs of families in an affirming way
Be aware of our own unresolved family issues
Acknowledge our own biases of family members, specifically regarding substance use disorder and mental illness
Explore some of the tools and approaches to connecting with and supporting families
